Here at Animal Hospital at Brier Creek, we realize that informing pet parents about the medical, behavioral, training and grooming needs of their new baby is as important as the medical needs of the patient. This is a schedule of what we are going to cover during your puppy’s first few months of life as well as your puppy’s medical needs. The order and the extent to which each topic is covered, and the exact medical needs of the puppy will, of course, vary for each puppy and owner, but this is a general idea of what to expect.
Visit One:
- First complete physical examination and checking for congenital problems.
- Information on vaccination schedule.
- First distemper/parvo vaccination and intranasal Bordetella vaccination.
- Information on heartworm and flea/tick control and first dosages.
- First intestinal parasite screening (bring fecal sample) & deworming and information on intestinal parasites.
- Housebreaking information, beginning handling of puppy.
- Information on normal behavior, appropriate toys and chew, play, exercise.
Visit Two:
- Second distemper/parvo vaccination, first leptospirosis vaccination if old enough and if exposure requires.
- General bathing, grooming, ear cleaning, nail trimming information.
- Refill heartworm, flea/tick preventatives if needed.
- Second intestinal parasite screening (bring fecal sample).
Visit Three
- Third distemper/parvo vaccination, first or second leptospirosis vaccination and rabies vaccination when 14 weeks or older.
- Information on spay/neuter (JPS information for hips if medium to large breed).
- Dental care.
- Basic obedience information.
- Refill heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
- Subsequent visits depend on the puppy’s age and needs. There should be 2 negative intestinal parasite screenings. The puppy will need a distemper/parvo vaccination every 2-3 weeks until older than 15 weeks of age.
